A Few Things To Check Before Calling To Have Your Air Conditioner Serviced

If you have noticed that your air conditioner is not putting out as much cool air as normal, and your home is getting to be a bit warmer than you like, you need to do a bit of troubleshooting. As long as the unit is still working, you can hear it kicking on, and feel air blowing out of the vents, you may be able to fix a simple problem yourself. Here are a few things you can do that may have the system working efficiently again.

Check, Clean or Change Filters

Dirty filters will keep the air from flowing the way it should. A dirty air intake filter will keep the airflow from getting to the unit to be cooled, while a dirty exhaust filter will keep the cool air from circulating into the house. Go through every room and check any vents and filters to make sure they are not clogging up the system. While a vent is not actually a filter, if the air cannot come out of it due to debris clogging it or something covering it, you will have reduced performance of the system. Clear away any clogs, and be sure to clean or replace the filters when they start looking dirty.

Clear the Growth Around the Outside Unit

Most air condition systems have a unit that sits outside the hose. If you have tall grass, bushes, or other things growing around it, they could be keeping the condensing unit from exchanging cool and warm air efficiently. In addition to stopping good airflow, leaves and twigs can get into the unit. This can cause damage to the unit and may also reduce the performance of it. You may want to switch off the breaker and open up the unit to get everything out. It can also be a good idea to use a hose to spray through the vents and coils, but be sure to spray from inside the unit to outside to keep the water inside to a minimum. This can also be done if the coils are covered with ice. However, if the unit is icing over, you may want to call for professional air conditioning services to have the problem resolved.

Do not wait until the unit is no longer running at all to do the troubleshooting. If you cannot find why the system is not cooling your home adequately, have a professional come look things over. Waiting will only make the whole situation much hotter.
