Working With Incredible Plumbers

Are Your Home's Drains Ready For Summer House Guests?

Summer is a time when many people take vacation to go visit relatives and friends. Now that summer is here, people across the country are getting ready for house guests from out of town. As you make preparations, don't forget to check the status of your drains and clean the drains if necessary. Having extra people in your home will mean extra showers, extra laundry to be done, more dishes to be washed and more toilets to be flushed. Slow drains with house guests around can lead to inconvenience and even ruined plans.

Check Drains in the House

Run the faucet in all your sinks and showers, and test out your garbage disposal. Note which faucets are slow, and which ones are working well. If all the drains in your home are slow, this is indicative of a sewer clog. Call a plumber right away.

Clear Sink, Shower and Bath Tub Drains

Slow sink and bathtub drains can often be cleared with vinegar and boiling water. To do this, put on a pot of water to boil. When the water is near boiling, pour several cups of white vinegar down the drain. Vinegar is slightly acidic and will help eat away at any organic material (like hair) caught in the drain. Chase the vinegar with boiling water. Repeat as necessary.

Clear Your Garbage Disposal Drain

Cleaning your garbage disposal is similar to cleaning out your sink drains, but sometimes the garbage disposal benefits from extra care. To clean out your garbage disposal, follow the procedure described to clean out drains. When this is done, put on another pot of water to boil, then sprinkle the inside of your garbage disposal with baking soda. When the water is boiling, flush down the baking soda with boiling water. Baking soda is also a natural cleaning agent and will help clear out sticky substances like grease and cheese.

Plunge the Toilets

Use a plunger to plunge any slow toilets. To do this, place the plunger inside the bowl. Put the rubbery end of the plunger against the toilet bowl until it forms a tight seal. Finally, pump the plunger up and down forcefully, again and again. Flush the bowl, check the results and try again as necessary.

Call for a Professional

These efforts only work for some clogs, and generally only for slow drains. Drains that are fully clogged cannot be fixed with these methods. To clear drains that are completely clogged, call professional drain repair service before the arrival of your house guests.
