School Board Minutes - February, 2008

MINOT CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 20, 2008 MEETING

The meeting was called to order at 5:15 P.M. in the Bishop Ryan Library.

I. Opening Prayer - Fr. Walter.

II. Roll Call - Brenda Nush

Members Present: Bob Anderson, Kim Burckhard, Ralph Charley, Bob Crockett, Fr. Harvey, Jim Kasper, Gregg Magnuson, Dean Rubbelke, Terresa Schulenberg, Jenny Steckler, Fr. Walter, and Shane Zaback.

Members Absent: Don Burke, Kristi Feist, Mike Gaddie, Fr. Krebs, Janelle Schell, Fr. Zimmer.

Ex-Officio Members Present: Kevin Harmon, Barb Johnson, Brenda Nush, and Gary Volk.

Ex-Officio Absent: Terry Voiles.

III. Recommended Action

A. Motion by Gregg Magnuson and seconded by Fr. Harvey to approve the minutes of the December 2007 meeting. Motion passed, all ayes.

B. Motion by Ralph Charley and seconded by Fr. Walter to accept the financial statements for December 2007, approving general fund checks #22732-22846 and payroll checks #56504-56655. Motion passed, all ayes. Motion by Bob Crockett and seconded by Ralph Charley to accept the financial statements for January 2008, approving general fund checks #22847-23002 and payroll checks #56656-56805.

C. Additional Agenda Items: Table Item C New Business to March meeting.

IV. School Reports

A. Elementary Report - Mr. Volk presented his written report, and reported that the elementary staff have just completed courses in CPR and defibulators, called "Heartsaver and AED Training".

B. High School Report - Mr. Voiles absent.

C. Superintendent's Report: Mr. Harmon mentioned that 3 of our students - Austin Vetter, Matt Charley, and Stephanie Olson have been nominated for the Character Counts Coalition.

V. Committee Reports

A. Development and Marketing: March 6 set for Prospective Student Day; $21000 grant received from the Diocese; Carnival looks to make $38,000-$40,000.

B. Curriculum & Technology: Currently working on School Calendar for 2008-2009; Registration Fair in March; 4-year planning for 8th & 9th Graders and parents scheduled for March.

C. Finance Committee: Met last week - approved the bills, further budget discussions.

D. Facilities Maintenance and Transportation Committee: Security cameras a priority for the 2008-2009 school year.

E. Personnel Development and Retention: No report.

F. Student Life & Safety: No report.

G. Structure Committee:

H. Catholic Identity: Meeting included Lenten projects underway and the Guatemala project and donations. Fr. Harvey distributed copies of the Board Member pledge.

I. Foundation: Met last week, discussed thoughts on debt retirement; Foundation agreed to remove the $50,000 Debt retirement line from the 2008-2009 MCS School budget. Vacancy spots on the Foundation Board have been filled.

VI. Old Business

A. Market Research Survey: Mr. Harmon spoke on the Summit held in Bismarck, over 100 people attended; results of the survey indicate better academics are needed; Strategic Planning session is next on the Agenda.

VII. New Business

A. Following discussion, President Rubbelke set the date of the next meeting to be March 27 at 5:15 p.m.; a show of hands indicated that a majority of members prefer 5:15 p.m. for future meetings as well. At this time, Fr. Walter had to leave the meeting, he announced that he would be retiring on June 30th of this year. Board members expressed their gratitude for all he has done for Catholic Schools.

B. 2008-2009 MCS Budget: Gregg Magnuson informed the board that tuition rates for 2008-2009 would be set at this meeting; following discussion, a $75 increase at the Elementary level, grades 1-5, was approved. Motion was made by Jenny Steckler and seconded by Shane Zaback to approve the 2008-2009 tuition rates as presented on the Enrollment Form. All members voted yes, except Bob Anderson, who voted no. Further discussion followed, and a motion was made by Ralph Charley to accept the Budget as presented for 1st reading. Motion was seconded by Bob Crockett, all members voted aye.

VIII. Board Concerns, Comments, and Suggestions followed.
